You are not feeling on top of your game these days. You describe your situation as feeling like your brain is going through a mist or fog in terms of your consciousness. While it may help to splash some cold water on your face to bring your mental faculties to a higher state of consciousness for a time, it is short-lived. Before long, you notice that you are slipping back into this state of brain fog where you are not quite connected with everything that is going on around you. Even using mild stimulants like caffeine will not make a huge dent in this sensation of clouding going on in your mind.
The state known as brain fog has some distinctive symptoms, but the difficulty in obtaining a clear diagnosis is that these sensations being experienced are in many ways considered medically subjective. However, if you are going through a state of brain fog, the experience on your end is anything but subjective in terms of how you perceive it.
A Dream-Like State
Some individuals compare brain fog to walking around in an almost dream-like state. It is to them like not being fully awake, so their awareness of details in their ability to cognitively process what is going on around them becomes fuzzy or blurry. Like in a dream, the sensory perceptions are less intense, and many individuals speak of losing track of time.
Different from Drowsiness
It is tempting to suspect that brain fog is a deficient state of arousal due to being overly tired from obtaining insufficient rest. However, it is not really a state of drowsiness; although, it is possible for a person to experience drowsiness on top of symptoms of brain fog. Brain fog is related rather to the pathology of delirium and leans more in the direction of a coma than in the direction of your needing sleep. The interesting thing about brain fog, however, is that it is not as severe as delirium, so you will not likely be diagnosed with delirium if you have brain fog.
