Do you experience a burning sensation in your chest or throat? Heartburn is a very common condition that can become more prevalent with certain dietary habits as well as with age. The experts at Enhanced Wellness Living can help determine the cause of your heartburn and help you find a treatment right for you.
What Is Heartburn?
Heartburn occurs when acid from the stomach travels up the esophagus. This acid reflux can not only create chest discomfort but a burning sensation towards the back of the throat.
There is a muscle located at the very bottom of the esophagus which closes once food or liquid has traveled down into the stomach. If this muscle becomes weak, it may not close quickly enough, allowing acid to escape back into the esophagus. Those who experience frequent acid reflux may be diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
How Do You Treat Acid Reflux and Heartburn?
GERD is treated with over-the-counter medications known as “antacids” in most cases. Antacids help neutralize acid in the stomach to prevent burning sensations in the chest and throat. If you experience severe heartburn, one of our providers may prescribe stronger medication.
Distinguishing Heartburn From Other Diagnoses
Some people may mistake acid reflux or heartburn for cardiac arrest, but there are some symptoms that distinguish the two. While acid reflux is mainly a burning sensation, many other symptoms accompany a heart attack. Usually, a heart attack incorporates heart palpitations, sweatiness, and shortness of breath. These physiological changes do not occur with heartburn alone.
