An approach to healthcare that looks for the root cause of your symptoms instead of only managing them.
Enhanced Wellness Living is a functional medicine clinic in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Kelly Engelmann, FNP-BC, opened it in 2004, which makes it the longest standing functional medicine practice in the state.
Most people who come to us have already been somewhere else. Two doctors, sometimes three. Their labs came back normal. They still feel awful. What they say when they call is some version of the same sentence: I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.
Here is the difference in one line.
We do not stop at the test result. We build the plan, we hand you the map, and we keep going until we find what is driving it.
An approach to healthcare that looks for the root cause of your symptoms instead of only managing them.
Serving Ridgeland, Jackson & Madison since 2004.
Standard lab work is built to catch disease, not to explain how you feel. A result inside the normal range only means you are not sick enough to be flagged. It does not mean your body is working the way it should.
There is a second problem, and Kelly Engelmann names it as her biggest frustration with this industry. Plenty of places will run impressive testing. Far fewer will build you a plan of care to act on. Patients now order labs online and ask an AI to interpret them, and that misses a great deal.
Testing without a plan is just expensive data. Somebody has to sit with your results and tell you what to do on Monday morning.
A standard visit is built around a diagnosis code and a fifteen minute slot. Care at Enhanced Wellness Living is built around a sixteen week program with a written roadmap and a team of three. The table below compares what patients tell us they experienced elsewhere with how we work in Ridgeland.
| Feature | What patients describe elsewhere | Enhanced Wellness Living |
|---|---|---|
| The visit | A long wait, then a short visit. One patient told us they watched the doctor Google their question. | An in depth initial consultation that walks through your full history, your symptoms, your goals, and every lab you already have. |
| The question asked | What is your diagnosis and which drug matches it. | When did you last feel well, and what was the first domino that fell. A virus, a surgery, a trauma, a major stressor. |
| Testing | A standard panel, reviewed against the normal range. | Testing chosen for your case, read for patterns rather than pass or fail. |
| What you leave with | A prescription and a follow up in three months. | A written roadmap card so you always know what comes next. |
| Who treats you | One provider, in isolation. | Two nurse practitioners and a health coach. Your case is reviewed by the team. |
| Between visits | Call back and leave a message. | Answers usually within 24 hours, at the latest 48, by phone, text, or email. |
| When progress stalls | You are told the labs look fine. | We look for what is underneath it. Kelly's word for the team is relentless. |
Three things, and all three came out of the interviews rather than a brochure.
Kelly Engelmann describes the team’s core strength as not settling for having no answer. If your progress is not moving in a reasonable direction, Enhanced Wellness Living goes looking for what is driving that. We will not promise you an outcome. We will promise you that this clinic does not give up and does not run out of next steps.
Labs and lifestyle is the framework the whole practice runs on. Your labs are the map in the mall that shows you are here. Lifestyle is the route you walk to get where you want to be. A clinic that gives you only the map has done half the job.
The body has a tremendous capacity to heal and repair itself. Most people have lost hope in that, and getting it back is the first real change we see.
We also disagree with a common message online. Influencers like to say there is one root cause, and that fixing that one thing fixes everything. That is not how bodies work. It is usually a group of things driving the dysfunction, and the foundation has to come first.
The other half of what we believe is about you. Patients do the work. We help you see what to do. When a patient sits in our office crying about how far they have come, the honest answer is that they changed their life and we handed them the map.
This is right for you if you have normal labs and abnormal energy, if you have been dismissed, or if you are the kind of person who wants to know why rather than what to take. About half our patients are professionals catching a change early. The other half arrive saying you are my last resort.
This is not right for you if you want a prescription and no other changes. Lifestyle is usually what is driving the problem, and no program works around that. It is also not right if you cannot make time for the appointments. We would rather say so on a fifteen minute phone call than after you have paid for a consultation.
Yes. Functional medicine is practiced by licensed clinicians and built on standard medical science: laboratory testing, physiology, and peer-reviewed nutrition and lifestyle research. Here, care is led by board-certified nurse practitioners, and progress is measured with real labs, not guesswork.
Patients commonly come to us with fatigue, hormone imbalance, thyroid concerns, gut issues, weight that won’t budge, brain fog, poor sleep, and men’s and women’s wellness concerns. If your labs keep coming back “normal” but you don’t feel normal, functional medicine is built for exactly that.
No. We work alongside your existing care. As an integrative practice we combine root-cause functional medicine with conventional medicine when it’s the right tool, and we communicate with your other providers as needed.
