What if Aging Isn’t Inevitable?

Listen on Spotify or Apple!

00:00:04:24 – 00:00:11:19
Synergee
Welcome back, Synergee listeners. Today’s conversation is one that will completely challenge the way that we think about aging.

00:00:11:22 – 00:00:21:15
Synergee
Aging isn’t simply about getting older. What if it’s actually about the result of breakdown, disconnection, inflammation, and the loss of communication within the body?

00:00:21:20 – 00:00:27:21
Synergee
what if the body was designed to heal, to adapt, to regenerate far more than we’ve been led to believe.

00:00:27:22 – 00:00:35:14
Synergee
So today we get to be joined by Doctor Ian White. He’s a PhD who has been working in this regenerative space for many years, and he’s in the process of writing a book, The Unified Theory of Life, and it’s going to change the way we think about aging. This conversation is going to go far beyond wrinkles and lifespan.

00:00:46:03 – 00:01:11:02
Synergee
We’re going to talk about cellular communication and the things that truly drive aging. This is one of those episodes that may completely change the way you think about your body, and maybe even your life. So, Lori, I know in your practice in the villages you have been seeing, you know, the age population for quite some time. And I’ve been in practice for 20 plus years, 24, 20, 23, 24 years in the functional space functional medicine in Ridgeland, MS.

00:01:11:02 – 00:01:20:16
Synergee
And my patients are starting to age right. I’m starting to see patients at an advanced age that I didn’t see before, just because they’ve been with me for so long.

00:01:20:22 – 00:01:33:16
Synergee
And so I’m excited about this conversation. I know that you’re excited about this conversation. Is there anything, Lori, that you want to walk away with today from Doctor White? What do you think about your patient population?

00:01:33:18 – 00:01:49:08
Synergee
Yeah, I think the biggest thing is not just me walking away today, but people walking away from this today feeling very excited that age chronologically is one thing, that biological age is something different and you are not a victim of your age.

00:01:49:10 – 00:02:01:11
Synergee
If you have the power to change it. And so that’s what I hope to walk away with, is that our listeners today feel really excited about what they have the potential to do as they get older.

00:02:01:11 – 00:02:20:08
Synergee
So I’m just excited to have you here today. I don’t believe in accidents. I got the chance to meet Doctor White at a local event, where we were talking about some really cool things on the horizon in stem cells, stem cell biology. I’m just going to say that because I’m just intrigued by the fact that you are a stem cell biologist.

00:02:20:09 – 00:02:38:05
Synergee
Like that to me, was just intriguing all of its own. But just being there that day to me really opened my eyes and got me super excited about what’s on the horizon. So I was just thankful to be there, thankful to meet you. Which led to this conversation and some others that we’ve had. So thanks for joining us today.

00:02:38:05 – 00:02:39:13
Synergee
I know you’re super busy, super, super busy with all you have going on, but you took time out of your schedule. So I just want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you’re here today, sharing your knowledge.

00:02:50:00 – 00:03:57:11
Synergee
Yeah for sure. So give us a little bit like who is Doctor Ian White. Tell us about your story.

00:03:57:13 – 00:05:46:07
Doctor Ian White
Thank you.

00:05:46:09 – 00:07:18:08
Doctor Ian White
I love that. So when we think about aging, most people expect to decline as they age. That’s just part of the thing. So how would you talk about that for patients that have that perspective?

00:07:18:10 – 00:08:54:15
Doctor Ian White
I want what they’re having.

00:08:54:17 – 00:10:19:15
Doctor Ian White
Lobster. See I read that.

00:10:19:17 – 00:11:04:11
Synerge
Yeah sure.

00:15:32:14 – 00:15:48:23
Synergee
Wait a minute. Time out. So a standard American diet is a standard American diet. Low entropy. I just have to know.

00:15:49:00 – 00:16:52:21
Doctor Ian White
Yes.

00:16:52:23 – 00:17:08:13
Doctor Ian White
I would say as a perimenopause female, that’s what it feels like. It feels like when you get to Perimenopause we’re done with you. So get out of here. We’re tossing you right out.

00:17:08:15 – 00:23:18:03
Synergee
Yeah. Interesting.

00:23:18:05 – 00:24:27:24
Synergee
I don’t know what you are saying to the choir. Yes, we are, you know, undernourished.

00:24:47:19 – 00:25:13:13
Synergee
And think about the clothes that we’re wearing, too. I was challenged recently with looking at plastics, and I’m like, my clothes are plastic, like this. All polyester stuff. We’re absorbing some of that through our skin too.

00:25:16:16 – 00:25:23:23
Synergee
Sure. So, doctor. What? You mentioned a strategy that I want to go back to and that is fasting,
because I think fasting is one of the number one, least expensive tools that we have in our toolbox that we could be utilizing. But I think oftentimes our bodies are so stressed and undernourished that sometimes it can backfire. So knowing when to use that tool, how to use that tool, how to feel properly so that we’re not creating more of a micronutrient deficiency or enzyme deficiencies or other body burdens.

00:25:47:19 – 00:25:51:22
Synergee
What would you say to that?

00:30:23:13 – 00:30:49:12
Synergee
As practicing medical providers in this area I love right now that we have the ability to bridge the research and science with the practice, you know, Kelly and I and our practices, having been doing this for quite some time, one of the things we tell our, our clients is that there’s not one standard way of doing things. You know, like diet by definition, is what we feed ourselves on a daily basis to nourish ourselves, right?

00:30:49:13 – 00:31:14:07
Doctor Ian White
To generate the energy that we need to live. And we don’t subscribe to a single way of eating. There’s so many things out there, right? You know, follow this diet or follow that diet. The reality is, throughout the seasons of our lives, as we adapt, change where we’re at, our body needs different things. Right. And so, you know, we think about fasting, although it has great data, there’s for women and men.

00:31:14:07 – 00:31:34:08
Doctor Ian White
It’s different when they should be doing that. So I really appreciate that you went back and said, you know, listen, I’m not, I’m not a medical provider. I’m a scientist, I’m a scientist. And this is what I’m saying is this is what I see. And I love that perspective. I love having conversations like this for that very reason, because we’ve got to be able to bridge that gap,

00:31:34:09 – 00:31:35:01
Synergee
That’s right.

00:31:35:01 – 00:31:41:12
Synergee
And I want to go back to the food sensitivity testing, because that is one of the big tools that we use in helping patients define an anti-inflammatory and diet for themselves. A lot of times once a year, especially if they’ve had a chronic illness, we do encourage them to do a pretty extensive food panel to have a designer way of eating that decreases their overall inflammatory burden.

00:31:56:07 – 00:32:19:09
Synergee
I’m so happy that you brought that out. But another way that we have been able to pick up on food sensitivities is wearables. So wearing a continuous glucose monitor or wearing an aura ring where we can either see changes in blood sugar that aren’t relative to carbohydrate intake, but like that food creating an immune response. Creating an elevated blood sugar temporarily can be a way of picking that up.

00:32:19:09 – 00:32:39:06
Synergee
And then also elevation and heart rate. Sometimes with the oura ring, we’ll see elevation and heart rate happen with the food. That is a healthy food. But for that person it’s creating an inflammatory response. So there are many different ways to assess your body and determine foods that may be reacting in your body, that may not react in someone else’s body.

00:32:39:07 – 00:33:52:22
Doctor Ian White
So I’m a fan of that. I think the more information we have, the better we can design a lifestyle that decreases inflammation and makes us feel better.

00:33:52:24 – 00:35:27:04
Synergee
I have so many questions like, we could be here all day long. So do you think that aging should be classified as a disease?

00:35:27:06 – 00:35:46:24
Synergee
I do want to get into that because that’s so interesting. But I think about our listeners that are aging. Right. And they have gotten to say 65, 70, 80 and they’re like, I just want to do what I want to do. I don’t want to change. I don’t want to eat better. I don’t want to move my body.

00:35:46:24 – 00:36:02:08
Synergee
I don’t want to, I don’t want to, I don’t want to. And I’m like, this is the time you have to double down. You know, aging is not for sissies. And if you want to live well, function well, be well. There are certain things that you kind of have to double down as we get a little bit older.

00:36:02:12 – 00:42:25:08
Synergee
Would you agree with that? Do you think that’s. Yeah. Practical. Yeah.

00:42:25:10 – 00:42:43:18
Synergee
So other than exosomes, are there things that we should be doing on a daily basis? You mentioned red light therapy, but are there things that we need to be doing to stimulate or to regenerate our own stem cell utilization for repair?

00:42:43:20 – 00:42:55:22
Doctor Ian White
Sure.

00:47:56:15 – 00:51:10:17
Doctor Ian White
I love it. Thank you so much for not only your time today, but your contribution to science. You know, we need you doing what you’re doing to help us understand better as clinicians so that we can take this to the bedside and help our patients live and function their best. So thank you.
