What are the Symptoms of a Hormonal Imbalance?

As we get older in our years, lower levels of key hormones are produced by the endocrine system. In men, lower levels of testosterone are produced. In females, lower levels of estrogen are produced. This change in hormone production can bring about notable symptoms. Some of these are well-known, especially when it comes to what women go through in their menopausal years. A hormonal imbalance can occur due to more than just aging. It can also occur in younger men and women and even the youth.

Other Causes of a Hormonal Imbalance

Everyone experiences a fluctuation of key hormones in their bodies every so often. The problems start when the endocrine system of the body is not functioning properly, and this can happen because of a number of reasons. Simply being overworked or feeling stressed out in general can affect hormone production. Other causes of hormonal fluctuations can include:

  • Poor eating habits
  • Diabetes (1 and 2)
  • Cushing’s Syndrome
  • An overactive or under-active thyroid gland
  • Significant weight gain
  • Abuse of anabolic steroid medications
  • Use or abuse of certain prescription medications
  • The use of birth control medications
  • Having a severe allergic reaction to a food or chemical

The list of causes can become very long, especially if you separate them according to the sex of the individual.

Symptoms in Women

There are many times in a woman’s life in which a hormonal imbalance can occur. Menopause, menstruation and issues regarding pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding are examples of these times. Extreme changes in mood or behavior can occur in many women going through these periods. Other symptoms can include, but are clearly not limited to:

  • Heavy or unpredictable periods
  • Deepening of the voice
  • Growth of hair on the face and body
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Onset of osteoporosis

Symptoms in Men

Hormonal imbalances in men will occur primarily because of the aging process, outside of the years of puberty. Testosterone levels fall dramatically, and the risk of prostate cancer increases as many men get older. Some of the most common symptoms of a hormonal imbalance in men include:

  • Significantly reduced interest in sex
  • Lower muscle mass
  • Low sperm count
  • More breast tissue growth
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Osteoporosis
